Author’s note to a third edition now in progress and due for release in August 2008

This reprint will be a substantial revision and re-titling of my earlier book The Journeys to Coolangatta which was published in 2000 with specific objectives – most of which were achieved. It was aimed at gaining recognition for Alexander Berry as one of the greatest benefactors to the University of St Andrews, to bring his achievements and adventures into the public domain and to recognise his legacies to Shoalhaven area, the town of Berry and his influence in creating the agricultural success. The University now recognises Alexander Berry in its annual Kate Kennedy historical processions so that he is on a par with Andrew Carnegie and other notable Scots. In addition there was an exchange of gifts between the University and the Estate in 2002 to establish their historic relationship. The new world recognises the old world and vice versa.

In addition the achievements of Colin J Bishop and his family in restoring The Coolangatta Estate from dereliction in 1946 to a vibrant Hotel Complex and Vineyard are now well-recognised.

Having carried out further historical research it is clear that more emphasis should be placed on the voyages of Berry in his long-suffering ship The City of Edinburgh and his adventures amongst hostile indigenous tribes - these voyages compare favourably with those of Cook and others in the region in the previous century. It is likely that it will be released as
